Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque Guide
A Golden Jewel of Islamic Architecture Guide
The Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque is a stunning architectural masterpiece and a symbol of Brunei's Islamic faith. Located in Bandar Seri Begawan, the capital city, this mosque is a must-see for its breathtaking beauty, intricate details, and serene atmosphere. Its golden dome and minarets dominate the city skyline, reflecting the country's wealth and devotion. Named after the 28th Sultan of Brunei, the mosque was completed in 1958. It was designed by Italian architect Cavaliere Rudolfo Nolli, who incorporated Mughal and Malay architectural styles. The mosque's construction involved the use of luxurious materials, including Italian marble, Shanghai granite, English chandeliers, and Saudi Arabian carpets. The golden dome is made of pure gold, adding to the mosque's grandeur and opulence. Visitors can admire the mosque's exterior from the surrounding lagoon, which offers stunning reflections of the golden dome and minarets. Non-Muslims are allowed to enter the mosque outside of prayer times, but modest dress is required (clothing is often provided). Inside, you can marvel at the intricate details of the stained glass windows, marble columns, and elaborate decorations. The mosque also features a ceremonial barge on the lagoon, which is used for special occasions. While Brunei doesn't have a specific culinary tradition tied directly to the mosque, the surrounding area offers a variety of Malay and Southeast Asian cuisine. Try local dishes like ambuyat (a starchy dish made from sago), nasi katok (fried chicken with rice and sambal), and various seafood dishes.
